About this wine
Character
A classically styled Brunello, as the Marone Cinzano family has always made it: no modern cut, but large oak casks and long ageing. The 2020 shows depth and complexity while already presenting itself as approachable. The bouquet offers black cherries, barberries, raspberries, plums and blood oranges, followed by mint, cedar, cherry stones, dried violet flowers, cinnamon, vanilla, crushed stone and forest floor.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in Col d'Orcia's south-facing vineyards in Montalcino, on a hill overlooking the Orcia river, around 300 metres above sea level, within the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Val d'Orcia. 142 hectares of vines, 108 of them Brunello: since 2010 the estate has been Tuscany's largest certified organic winery, with sheep and goats grazing between the rows and compost from its own cycle nourishing the soils. In 2020, a rainy start to winter was followed by cold January and February months, then hot summer weeks with showers in late August, and a September whose day-night temperature swings favoured polyphenol synthesis.
Grape variety and vinification
Sangiovese, hand-harvested and selected twice, both in the vineyard and at the sorting table in the cellar. Around 15 days of maceration and fermentation below 28 °C in wide, shallow 150-hectolitre steel tanks, designed for gentle extraction of tannin and colour. After malolactic fermentation, four years of ageing, of which 32 months in 25, 50 and 75-hectolitre botti of Slavonian and Allier oak, followed by at least twelve months of bottle ageing at controlled temperature.
On the palate
Dense, juicy and ripe, supple yet retaining the acid and tannic structure typical of Sangiovese. Sweet red and dark berry fruit, cherries, bread spices, a touch of quatre épices, ground stone and foliage. The finish is long and coating, with liquorice and candied orange zest.
Food pairings
Braised beef pot roast, pink-roasted rack of lamb, bistecca alla Fiorentina or aged pecorino.
Highlights
The 1500ml magnum allows the wine to mature more slowly. 14.5% vol., dry. For its work, the estate received the Slow Wine Guide's SNAIL Award 2023 and Wine Enthusiast's Environmental Advocate of the Year 2025.
