About this wine
Character
A sparkling wine that draws less on fruit than on depth, texture and terroir. It comes across as dense and generous, yet remains precise, carrying a vertical tension across the entire palate. Despite its opulence, it stays light-footed and retains a bright, almost weightless freshness.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from the single vineyard Can Romeu. Gramona has been working since 1850 in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia in the Penedès, on soils of limestone and fossil deposits that give Xarel·lo and Macabeu their mineral tension. As early as 2000, the Batlle i Gramona family converted all 150 hectares to organic farming; Javier Gramona and his team regard the vineyards as a living ecosystem.
Grape variety and vinification
Predominantly Xarel·lo, complemented by 30 percent Macabeu. After traditional bottle fermentation, the 2015 batch spent over 100 months on the lees and was disgorged as Brut Nature, meaning with no dosage. A solera more than 100 years old lends the wine additional maturity and complexity. 12.0% vol.
On the palate
The fine bead meets chalky minerality, savoury salinity and creamy richness, with the acidity fully integrated. Sourdough, roasted hazelnuts and almonds and fine buttery pastry return from the nose, joined by ripe apple, pear and white peach, along with dried herbs such as marjoram, savory and tarragon. The finish is long, with nutty accents and stony freshness lingering for minutes.
Special features
Label, closure and wax seal are applied by hand. Over four million bottles rest in Gramona's underground cellars. The label bears the Demeter logo.
