About this wine

Character

A dense, concentrated Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the southern Rhône, in which the heat and drought of the 2017 vintage remain perceptible as aromatic concentration. Power, structure and spice define this wine, vinified dry at 15.0% Vol.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from the historic Les Cadettes vineyard, the estate's oldest parcels below the château, with sandy-clay soils. Here stand La Nerthe's oldest vines, over 85 years old, including Grenache Noir planted in 1935. The estate farms 92 hectares across 57 parcels and has worked entirely organically since 1998, without chemical fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides.

Grape variety and vinification

In 2017 the blend comprised 59% Grenache Noir, 31% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre. After hand-harvesting and selection, the three varieties ferment together spontaneously in a large wooden vat, with maceration lasting three weeks. After malolactic fermentation, part of the wine ages in foudre, the rest in new barriques, for twelve months.

On the palate

Velvety entry with ripe red berry fruit and appealing volume, followed by intensity and grip: bay leaf, pipe tobacco and complex spice. The tannins are pronounced yet beautifully enrobed. On the nose, candied wild strawberries, maraschino cherries, raspberries macerated in spirit, along with milk chocolate, caramel, cloves and cinnamon, smoke and tobacco.

Distinctive features

The joint vinification of the three varieties and ageing in foudre give the wine harmony and finesse already, despite its concentration. At the same time, all the components are in place for decades of ageing.
