About this wine
Character
A dry Riesling from the steep Pündericher Marienburg vineyard, showing fruit and rock in equal measure. Lemon zest, white peach and green apple sit alongside herbal spice and a smoky note. Here, minerality is the backbone, not a decoration.
Terroir and origin
Clemens Busch farms 20 hectares of steep vineyards, 11 of them in the legendary Marienburg above Pünderich on the Mosel. Three shades of slate define the hill: red, grey and blue, distinguishable by the colour of the capsule. The Fahrlay grows on blue slate, which lends mineral freshness. The oldest vines root up to eight metres deep into the slate, since the soil has been farmed without herbicides since 1976.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling, single varietal. 80 percent of the estate's wines ferment spontaneously in centuries-old 1000-litre casks, without cultured yeasts, enzymes or fining; some fermentations take over a year. Extended ageing on fine lees adds further complexity, while sulphur additions remain minimal. The wine has 12.5% ABV.
On the palate
Dry and taut, with vibrant acidity and a saline edge. Lees ageing lends texture beneath the fruit, and the finish stays long and mineral.
Food pairing
With grilled fish, especially trout and pike-perch, as well as white meats such as veal and poultry. The smoky note also pairs well with smoked salmon.
Highlights
Clemens Busch runs the estate in its seventh generation and stopped using herbicides in 1976 at the age of 19; he has worked biodynamically since 1986. Today his wife Rita and son Johannes work alongside him at the estate. His wines appear on the lists of five three-star restaurants.
