About this wine
Character
A dry Riesling whose freshness comes from the soil. The blue slate of the Pündericher Marienburg lends mineral freshness, and that is exactly what this wine is built around: precisely structured, cool, and light-footed at 12.0% vol.
Terroir and origin
Clemens Busch farms 20 hectares of steep vineyards in Pünderich, eleven of them in the Pündericher Marienburg. Three slate colors define the terroir: red, grey, blue. The capsule color reveals on which soil the grapes grew. The oldest, ungrafted vines send roots up to eight meters deep into the slate bedrock, a depth reachable only because the soil has been farmed without herbicides since 1976. This depth acts as a natural buffer against heat and drought.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling, varietal. The estate has worked biodynamically since 1986. In the cellar, intervention stays minimal: 80 percent of the wines ferment spontaneously in century-old 1000-liter oval casks, some built in Rita's father's workshop. No cultured yeasts, no enzymes, no fining; some fermentations stretch on for over a year. Extended aging on the fine lees adds further complexity.
On the palate
Dry, with lime zest, green apple and white blossom, carried by crisp acidity. The finish remains saline and mineral, with a note of damp slate.
Distinctive features
1500 ml magnum, bottled by the Clemens Busch estate in Pünderich. Clemens Busch runs the estate with his wife Rita and son Johannes; now in its seventh generation, he carries the same first name as his ancestors. The wines feature on the lists of five three-star restaurants.
