About this wine
Character
A white wine of both power and clarity: 14.0 % ABV, dry, with an acidity deliberately preserved by forgoing malolactic fermentation. The fruit is ripe, the drive stays cool.
Terroir and origin
Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône. The Avril family has lived in the village since the 1700s, and the estate has existed since 1896. The eponymous Clos des Papes parcel lies by the ruins of the Popes' castle, surrounded by historic walls. The round galets store heat during the day and release it to the vines at night. The 32 hectares have been organically certified since 2010/2011.
Grape variety and winemaking
Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, Picpoul and Picardan. The whole clusters go straight into the press, with all varieties fermented together as each reaches ripeness: in concrete vats, at 18 to 21 °C, over four weeks. No malolactic fermentation, so the acidity is preserved. Aging follows in large foudres, with no new oak used. The yield is 20 hectoliters per hectare, against the appellation's limit of 35.
On the palate
Young and already approachable, though decanting is still recommended. On the nose, grapefruit and lemon zest, honeysuckle and clover, pear and white peach, with a touch of reduction, crushed stone, fennel and anise seed. On the palate, a silky texture, ripe quince, tart citrus zest, herbs and anise, with a mouthwatering salinity on the finish.
Distinctive features
Clos des Papes deliberately bottles only one red and one white cuvée. Régis Avril once supplied his wines directly to French presidents de Gaulle and Pompidou; today they are exported to 39 countries. The corks have come from the same Portuguese producer since 1926. For Paul-Vincent Avril, 2023 marked the estate's 37th vintage.
