About this wine
Character
A Barbaresco that holds clarity and substance together: dark, juicy fruit and herbal spice over a firm, wiry tannic backbone. Dry, 14.0% ABV.
Terroir and origin
The Currá vineyard in Neive covers 2.8 hectares facing south-southwest. The vines stand on pure limestone and are 55 to 75 years old, with an average yield of 40 hectolitres per hectare. At Sottimano, Currá stands for extraction and longevity. Rino Sottimano acquired the Cottà farmstead in the late 1960s; today Andrea, Elena and Claudia run the estate, which spans nearly twenty hectares.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Nebbiolo. The fruit was destemmed, fermented on the skins for up to three months, with the cap punched down regularly in open stainless steel tanks. Fermentation is spontaneous, and bottling takes place without filtration or fining. Ageing lasted around 24 months in François Frère barrels, roughly 15% new oak, the rest one to four years old.
On the palate
On the nose, violet, aniseed and fennel seed, a touch of bay leaf and cubeb pepper over juicy black and sour cherries, a hint of plum, tobacco and crushed limestone. On the palate, fleshy and juicy, with a double dose of nervy, agile tension: taut tannin, firm structure, dark fruit and fine herbal, tobacco and spice nuances.
Food pairing
Coda alla vaccinara on polenta, Parmigiana di Melanzane and tuna-avocado tartare.
Details
All of Sottimano's vineyards have been farmed organically since the early 1970s: no herbicides, no synthetic fertilisers, grass mown two to three times a year between the rows, every other row ploughed in autumn. Currá is one of the estate's five single-vineyard Barbarescos, alongside Cottà, Fausoni, Pajorè and Basarin.
