About this wine

Character

A dry Muscat d'Alexandrie fermented on the skins at 10.5% ABV. The variety's aromatics are fully preserved without the wine gaining weight: complex, precise, weightless.

Terroir and origin

Domaine Matassa farms 20 hectares around Calce and Espira-de-l'Agly, high-altitude plots in the garrigue up to around 450 metres, surrounded by cedars, fig trees and wild rosemary. The soils are schist and marl. Tom and Nathalie Lubbe work with cover crops, compost and manual labour, certified by Ecocert.

Grape variety and winemaking

A single-varietal Muscat d'Alexandrie from old vines grown organically and biodynamically, with a yield of no more than 18 hectolitres per hectare. After hand harvesting, the grapes fermented for 35 days on the skins. Malolactic fermentation followed pressing, then eleven months of ageing in neutral 500-litre oak barrels. The wine was bottled unfiltered and without added sulphur.

On the palate

On the nose, elderflower and acacia blossom, muscat and roses, ripe cider apples, a touch of classic hops, herbal tea and a creamy note of peach compote with cream. The palate opens juicy, with fine fruit shifting between ripe stone fruit, pome fruit and orange. The extended skin contact leaves subtle tannin and extract, folding into a crisp acid structure.

Food pairing suggestions

Pairs well with pan-fried sole, couscous with caramelised fennel and oranges, chickpea curry, young goat's cheese or white asparagus with herb butter.

Special features

Since the 2008 vintage of the Alexandria, Tom Lubbe has fermented his white wines on the skins. Harvest of the muscat sometimes begins as early as the start of August, hence the 10.5% ABV. Since 2015, no cuvée from the estate has received added sulphur.
