About this wine
Character
A red that radiates freshness rather than power: 11.0% ABV, juicy fruit, topped with a touch of pleasant, primal wildness. A refined companion to food that underscores rather than dominates.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow on old vines on schist soil around Calce in Roussillon. Tom Lubbe farms high-altitude plots there in the garrigue up to around 450 metres, surrounded by Mediterranean scrub and wild rosemary. The soils of Domaine Matassa are schist and marl, black schist and black marl.
Grape variety and vinification
A blend of Grenache and Carignan, where it is not Grenache rouge that sets the tone but the Lledoner Pelut variant. Fermented with whole clusters, aged in concrete, neutral wood and clay. Spontaneous fermentation, no filtration, no additions. Since 2015, no sulphur dioxide has left the cellar.
On the palate
The nose shows juicy blackberry, sloe and wild raspberry, along with undergrowth, rosemary, thyme, fruit tea and a hint of wood smoke and liquorice. On the palate the wine refreshes with lively acidity and velvety tannins, staying lean and keeping its drinkability all the way through the finish.
Special features
Tom Lubbe bottled the first vintage of Domaine Matassa in 2003 in his living room. He harvests early, which is why his wines rarely exceed 12% alcohol, and works with cover crops, compost and hand labour. Ecocert certifies farming without chemicals.
