About this wine
Character
A white wine of cool restraint, dry and lean at 12.5% ABV. Nothing pushes forward: the components sit side by side like an extract, precisely placed and measured out only as sparingly as the wine's line demands.
Terroir and origin
De Sousa farms 9.5 hectares at the heart of the Côte des Blancs, spread across the Grand Cru villages of Avize, Cramant, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. The vines average over 45 years of age. The house's cellars are carved into the chalk and hold a constant 10°C, keeping the ageing slow and gentle.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay, vinified as a still wine: the Coteaux Champenois is the unsparkling side of a house that otherwise bottles Champagne. Erick De Sousa was an early adopter of oak barrels for vinification in Avize, not for the wood aromas, but for texture and depth.
On the palate
The nose opens with a reductive note of matchstick and rubber, which with air moves towards linseed oil and lays down an earthy foundation. Above it, citrus, wet river pebbles and green hazelnuts. On the palate it's firm-gripped, with real grip: lemon oil, powdery fine tannin, dusty minerality, underpinned by a chalky, limestone line that carries the finish.
Food pairings
Crostini with preserved lemon and fennel agrodolce, pan-seared loup de mer with roasted lemon and thyme, or corn-fed chicken breast stuffed with scampi and thyme velouté.
Distinguishing features
Manuel De Sousa arrived in Avize as a Portuguese soldier and stayed on; his grandson Erick converted the estate to organic farming in the late 1990s. Organic certification followed in 2010, Demeter recognition in 2013, whose logo appears on the label. Today the house is run by Charlotte, Valentin and Julie De Sousa.
