About this wine

Character

The Coteaux Champenois Rouge AOC 2020 from De Sousa is a still red wine made from 100% Pinot Noir, translating the coolness of Ambonnay into red fruit and acidity. The nose focuses on concentrated, extract-rich fruit: wild raspberry, redcurrant, tart cranberry, followed by pomegranate syrup and subtle spicy notes.

Terroir and origin

The vines are around 70 years old and stand at the heart of the Montagne de Reims, in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay. The estate itself is based in Avize, where Charlotte, Valentin and Julie De Sousa farm 9.5 hectares, Demeter-certified since 2013. Latitude and terroir are clearly recognisable in the glass.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Noir, hand-harvested and spontaneously fermented. Eight days of gentle maceration with pump-overs, followed by around twelve months of ageing in oak barrels. The 2020 vintage yielded exactly 347 bottles, vinified dry at 12.5% vol.

On the palate

A lively, broad arc of acidity unfolds the deep red fruit and shapes the texture. Sour cherry and redcurrant take the lead, the tannins are fine-grained and tightly knit, the texture chalky and unfiltered. Over the next five to seven years, this wine should develop beautifully.

Food pairing suggestions

Roasted butternut squash with harissa and ras el hanout butter picks up the wine's spicy notes. Grilled sardines meet the cool acidity and red fruit. With small veal escalopes with red wine butter, the fine-grained tannins come into their own.

Special features

Erick De Sousa began converting to organic farming in the late 1990s, followed by organic certification in 2010 and Demeter recognition in 2013. The estate uses oak barrels not for wood aroma, but for texture and depth.
