About this wine
Character
A red wine of uncompromising clarity that brings together wildness and elegance. Its overall impression thrives on tension, precision and intensity; nothing here is polished, and the winemaking steps back behind the origin.
Terroir and origin
The El Escolladero vineyard measures 0.95 hectares and sits at 650 metres altitude in Rioja Alavesa, at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. The soil is calcareous, typical of this area. Arturo and Kike de Miguel Blanco farm their vineyards organically; the cool nights at altitude give the wines their freshness.
Grape variety and vinification
The base is a 73-year-old field blend planted with Tempranillo and Graciano. The grapes are fermented with the stems, and the wine matures for twelve months in 600-litre barrels, which give it room to develop without overlaying it with oak notes.
On the palate
Purple-red in the glass. The nose shows chalky limestone, straightforward and without make-up, already an experience even at this young stage. On the palate the wine remains sleek, racy and vibrant, yet subtle: fine tannin and piquant acidity run straight through the mouth, the finish is juicy and gripping.
Special features
Artuke classifies its wines following the Burgundian model, that is, by origin rather than by ageing time. The de Miguel Blanco brothers rank the single-vineyard wine El Escolladero as Grand Cru. The wine is dry and has 14.0% vol.
