About this wine
Character
Les Margues is a white wine with its own distinctive signature: expressive, spicy and layered, built so that ripe fruit and acidity hold each other in tension. In the glass it shows a pale gold hue.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in high-altitude vineyards of the Catalan DOQ Priorat on limestone and clay-marl soils. White varieties account for only around five percent of the area's acreage and production. Behind Portal del Priorat stands Alfredo Arribas, who worked as an architect in Barcelona, bought land in the south of Priorat near El Lloar and Bellmunt in 2001, and bottled his first wines in 2004.
Grape variety and vinification
A cuvée of Garnacha Blanca and Garnacha Gris. The must fermented spontaneously, followed by twelve months' ageing in 500-litre oak casks. Winemaker Juan Asens works with wild yeasts, short macerations and minimal use of sulphur; new barriques play no part. The wine stands at 13.5% ABV and is dry.
On the palate
Full-bodied and creamy, yet grippy and taut. Ripe fruit and floral notes gain contour from a fine line of acidity, joined by pressure and structure. The finish is long and carries saline notes that keep the palate alert. On the nose, cool minerality, herbs and a smoky, fiery reductive note merge into one another.
Food pairings
The saline length and creamy fullness find their counterpart in pan-fried calamari with lemon slices. Dried figs and cheese pair equally well, their sweetness and pungency absorbing the wine's acidity.
Special features
Alfredo Arribas farms organically and biodynamically, and limits yields radically to around one kilogram of grapes per vine. Of the forty hectares that make up the Clos del Portal estate, only fourteen hectares carry vines, with the rest given over to olives, almonds and Mediterranean woodland.
