About this wine
Character
A savoury red wine in which spice leads the fruit. The nose blends sweet and tart berries, sweet cherry, mulberry and wild raspberry, with cinnamon, clove and black pepper. Beneath lie deep umami notes of black olive, meat jus and lovage, along with rosemary, sage and dried oregano.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow on the slopes and terraces of Mas del Portal, at 320 to 360 metres above sea level, on pure slate, the black llicorella of Priorat. Their age ranges from 20 to 75 years, planted at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Carignan and Syrah. Fermentation lasts 22 and 24 days respectively and takes place in conical steel tanks; in the cellar, Juan Asens works with wild yeasts, short macerations and little sulphur. This is followed by 15 months in large French oak casks and barrels, with no new wood used.
On the palate
Compact and dense, with a juicy, meaty core: lovage, rosemary, oregano and black olive, along with a hint of grilled, marbled meat and a touch of green walnut. The fruit stays in the background, and the finish is ethereal and balsamic with a subtle Mediterranean nuance.
Special features
Somni means dream in Catalan. Alfredo Arribas, formerly an architect in Barcelona, bought land in southern Priorat in 2001 and bottled his first wines in 2004. He farms organically and biodynamically and limits the yield to around one kilogram of grapes per vine. The alcohol content is 14.0% vol.
