About this wine
Character
A red wine of lean power. Not a lightweight, but finely built: juicy, delicately spiced, with first-rate balance and tension. The substance is there, yet it drinks light.
Terroir and origin
El Mas de l'A is a wine project founded in 2018. The finca and vineyards lie at the foot of the Montsant mountains, in the higher, cooler part of the Priorat; the grapes for the Lo Noir grow on limestone soils. Behind Portal del Priorat stands Alfredo Arribas, who designed bars and hotels as an architect in Barcelona before buying land in the Priorat in 2001.
Grape variety and vinification
A cuvée with Garnacha as the main grape and a smaller share of Pinot Noir. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, and the wine is aged in large-format oak vats. In the cellar, winemaker Juan Asens continues the house's line: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, short macerations, minimal use of sulphur, no new barriques. 14.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Cherry red in the glass. The bouquet is invigorating and distinctive: fresh red berries, underpinned by an earthy minerality. First silky-soft tannin, then juicy fruit and fine spice, carried by a mineral freshness that keeps the finish long and lively.
Food pairings
Recommended with aubergine stew, as well as with lamb dishes of all kinds.
Distinctive features
That Pinot Noir thrives in the Mediterranean Priorat is surprising at first. The altitude at the foot of the Montsant mountains and the limestone soil make it possible, and the smaller share of this variety gives the Lo Noir its own distinctive, fresh style.
