About this wine

Character

A dry white wine of Mediterranean character, medium straw yellow, 13.5% Vol. The nose moves from white blossom such as peach and orange blossom and jasmine towards anise, grapefruit and white peach, with a light smoky note underneath.

Terroir and origin

Domaine Abbatucci lies in the Taravo valley in Corsica. The plots are spread across roughly 18 hectares at around 100 metres of altitude; the vineyard sits on granite, with the granitic sandy soils facing north and north-east. Jean-Charles Abbatucci took over the estate in 1992, converted it to biodynamic farming in 2000 and received Demeter certification in 2005. Ploughing is done with a horse, a flock of sheep provides ground cover and fertilises the soil, preparations made from medicinal herbs strengthen the vines, and the work follows Maria Thun's biodynamic calendar.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Vermentinu (Rolle, Vermentino) from 45-year-old vines, harvested at around 20 hl/ha. The grapes are hand-picked in the early morning, destemmed and pressed directly. After cool pre-fermentation settling and natural clarification of the must, the wine ferments slowly at 18°C and is then aged for five months in stainless steel. Unfined, lightly filtered.

On the palate

Ripe fruit with a fine extract sweetness: yellow pear and apple, quince and apricot, together with fresh lemon and orange. Herbal spice, liquorice as well as fennel and anise seed, carried by taut acidity and an almost stony salinity. The wine has substance and weight without feeling heavy, the texture stays silky, the minerality elegant.

Special features

The Faustine range is named after Jean-Charles Abbatucci's daughter. In the 1960s, Antoine Abbatucci saved eighteen indigenous Corsican grape varieties from extinction; the estate's work today builds on that legacy. The Demeter logo appears on the label.
