About this wine
Character
A young, sharply defined Tinto Fino that puts the freshness of Castile's high altitudes before sheer power. Dark blossoms and black cherry lead the first impression, with spice emerging as it opens up. Juicy, direct, with racy acidity as its backbone.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from several parcels around Sotillo de la Ribera on the northern edge of the Duero valley, at altitudes of 830 to 850 metres. Sand and clay define these sites. The temperature swings between day and night, often more than 20 degrees, preserve Tinto Fino's distinctive acidity.
Grape variety and vinification
100% Tinto Fino, as Tempranillo is known here, from young vines. Bodegas Félix Callejo has farmed organically since 2000: cover crops between the rows, spontaneous fermentation with the vineyard's own yeasts, and early harvesting for crisper fruit and more moderate alcohol. Fermentation and ageing take five months, partly in steel tank, partly in 500-litre oak barrels.
On the palate
Cool and subtle at first, then meaty and firmly gripping the tannin. Acidity and fruit take hold together, the acidity staying lively as liquorice, rosemary and a touch of juniper take over from the fruit and linger long. At this young stage, reduction still holds the fruit back slightly; air or patience resolve this quickly.
Special features
The Magnum, holding 1500 millilitres. Four siblings run the winery, founded by Félix and Pilar Callejo in 1989: José Félix and Noelia in the cellar, Cristina and Beatriz in sales. 14.0% ABV, dry.
