About this wine
Character
Powerful elegance: full body, tannin-rich structure and a freshness that keeps the wine in tension. Dark fruit meets cool, earthy minerality, the whole with depth and remarkable drinkability.
Terroir and origin
Sotillo de la Ribera lies at the northern edge of the Duero valley and is one of the coolest spots in Ribera del Duero. The vines for this wine grow on sparse gravel soils between 870 and 890 metres. The strictly continental climate brings cold winters, hot summers and day-to-night temperature swings often exceeding 20 degrees, which preserves the Tinto Fino's pronounced acidity. In total, the family farms 55 hectares across 27 plots between 830 and 930 metres.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Tempranillo, here called Tinto Fino, from old vines on single plots. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts, after which the wine ages 18 months in 500-litre oak barrels. 14.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
The nose moves through plum, mulberry and rosemary into a cool minerality. On the palate, silky tannin carries a polished texture, the oak is beautifully integrated, and the finish is long and balanced.
Food pairings
With red meat.
Special features
Bodegas Félix Callejo has been certified organic since 2000, with cover crops between the rows, spontaneous fermentation and early harvesting for more tension and moderate alcohol. Four siblings run the estate: José Félix and Noelia in the cellar, Cristina and Beatriz in distribution. Tim Atkin named José Félix Callejo "Winemaker of the Year" in 2021.
