About this wine

Character

A classic Rioja in a modern style. The nose brings together dark spice and lightness: black cherry, blackberry and morello cherry, alongside ripe strawberry and raspberry, plus vanilla, coconut, roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Tobacco leaf, cedarwood, liquorice, pepper, juniper and a hint of rosemary add depth. The oak feels well integrated, and the fruit blossoms.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from the younger vineyards on the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria. Here, "young" means 25 to 40 years old. The high altitude gives the wine its coolness. The winery, based in Samaniego in Rioja Alavesa, farms 76 hectares across 246 individual plots spread over nine municipalities.

Grape variety and vinification

The blend consists of 88% Tempranillo, 7% Graciano, 3% Garnacha and 2% Viura. After harvest, the grapes are cold-soaked for 24 hours before further processing. Fermentation takes place in neutral stainless steel and concrete tanks, followed by 22 months of barrel ageing: 30% new French oak, with the remaining 70% in second- or third-fill barrels.

On the palate

Cool and fresh, with a firm, gripping acidity that lends astringency and vivacity, powerful without being overdone. Dark fruit, spice and grip rest on a silky, velvety frame. The finish brings back coffee, cedarwood, vanilla and coconut.

Food pairings

Herb-roasted leg of lamb, grilled Ibérico pork, cochinillo asado, wild boar ragout or aged Manchego.

Special features

In 1989, Fernando Remírez de Ganuza built Spain's first mechanical sorting table. On it, the estate separates the sun-drenched shoulders of the grape from the tips; the shoulders go into the Gran Reserva and into this wine.
