About this wine

Character

The French Disko rouge 2023 is a pale, lively Cinsault that Tom Lubbe crafted for drinkability rather than concentration. At 10.0% ABV it stays lean; the early harvest gives it tension, while the lack of filtration lends an open, unpolished texture.

Terroir and origin

Domaine Matassa is based in Calce in Roussillon; the plots stretch across the hills around Calce and Espira-de-l'Agly up to around 450 metres, surrounded by garrigue, wild rosemary, cedars and fig trees. The soils consist of schist and marl, including black schist and black marl.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Cinsault, hand-picked early. Fermentation is spontaneous, carried out for the red wines as whole-cluster infusion, without fining or filtration. Since 2015, no cuvée from Matassa has received added sulphur.

On the palate

Morello cherry and redcurrant carry the wine, joined by wild rosemary and a fine herbal spice. The acidity is crisp, the tannins remain restrained, and the finish is dry, stony and saline.

Food pairings

Lightly chilled with roast quail, artisanal charcuterie, a lightly spiced vegetable tart or a grilled lamb burger. Equally good with antipasti and light bistro cooking.

Special features

Magnum, 1500 ml. In 2003, Tom Lubbe vinified his first vintage in his living room; today he and Nathalie farm 20 hectares, many vines between 60 and 120 years old. The work is Ecocert-certified, with cover crops, compost and hand labour.
