About this wine
Character
A dry red wine at 11.0% ABV that draws its energy from freshness and herbal spice rather than alcohol. Playful, juicy, effortless.
Terroir and origin
Domaine Matassa is located in Calce, in Roussillon. Tom and Nathalie Lubbe farm 20 hectares scattered across the hills around Calce and Espira-de-l'Agly, with many parcels of vines aged 60 to 120 years, some over a hundred years old. The high-altitude garrigue parcels reach around 450 metres, with soils of schist and marl, including black schist and black marl. Ecocert certified, reflecting a practice long established here: no chemicals, but cover cropping, compost and handwork.
Grape variety and vinification
100% Cinsault, harvested early — at the estate, harvest sometimes begins as early as the start of August, which is why the wines rarely exceed 12% alcohol. Spontaneous fermentation, with the reds made as whole-cluster infusions, often without destemming. Aged in neutral vessels, with Tom Lubbe favouring fibreglass. No fining, no filtration, no added sulphur since 2015.
On the palate
Hazy sour cherry red in the glass. On the nose, sour cherry, red berries, elderflower and rose petals, along with rosemary, thyme, elderwood, white pepper, aniseed and an umami aroma of savoury meat broth. The taste is fresh, floral and lively, with the low alcohol underscoring its lightness. Dry, with a herbal, spicy finish.
Special features
Magnum with 1500 ml, bottled by Domaine Matassa in Calce. Vin de France, unsulphured and unfiltered: the haze is part of the wine.
