About this wine

Character

A red built for liveliness rather than weight: 11.0% ABV, sour cherry, wild herbs and a freshness that carries the wine from start to finish. Tom Lubbe harvests early, and that's exactly what comes through here.

Terroir and origin

Matassa is based in Calce, in Roussillon. The plots are scattered across the hills around Calce and Espira-de-l'Agly, in high-altitude garrigue up to around 450 metres, surrounded by cedars, fig trees and wild rosemary. The soils are schist and marl, partly black schist, partly black marl. Many of the estate's vines are between 60 and 120 years old.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Cinsault. Tom Lubbe, a New Zealander with South African roots, trained under Gérard Gauby in Calce and bottled his first vintage in 2003 in his living room. He ferments his red wines spontaneously as whole-cluster infusions; in the cellar he uses large wooden foudres, barriques, clay and concrete, though he favours fibreglass. Since 2015 no cuvée has received sulphur, and none are fined or filtered.

On the palate

In the glass, a hazy sour-cherry red. The nose offers sour cherry, red berries, rosemary and thyme, alongside rose petals, elderflower and elderwood, white pepper, anise and a savoury umami note reminiscent of meat broth. The taste is fresh, floral and fragrant, invigorating, with the low 11.0% ABV keeping everything in motion.

Special features

Domaine Matassa is among the icons of the natural wine scene. Tom and Nathalie farm 20 hectares under Ecocert certification, with cover crops, compost and manual work; the earthworms have returned. The French Disko is the light-hearted side of this programme, a wine for pure enjoyment, on its own or with simple dishes.
