About this wine
Character
A dry Muskateller where primary grape aromas have stepped back in favour of spice. The nose opens with saffron and curry, quickly followed by coconut flakes, mint, sage, and tomato leaves. At 10.5% ABV, the wine remains light on its feet yet retains remarkable drive.
Terroir and Origin
The grapes come from Ried Bischofpoint, which covers 36 hectares in Mautern and Baumgarten. The vineyard is situated at an elevation of 246 to 340 metres with a north-northeastern aspect; the soil is colluvial ground with loess and loam. Nikolaihof itself stands on the foundations of the Roman fort Favianis dating back to 63 BC; the Saahs family has cultivated the estate since 1894.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Gelber Muskateller, an aromatic grape variety that finds ideal conditions in the Wachau. A 350-year-old wooden tree press operates in the estate’s vaulted Roman cellar, and the musts ferment spontaneously in large Slavonian oak casks. As an Archive Release in 2024, this vintage remained at the winery for more than a decade before being released.
On the Palate
The presence on the palate is powerful, textured, and energetic. Acidity and maturity are in perfect balance, while the texture is creamy and soft. It finishes with a delicate touch of bitterness that lends the wine a longer, more resonant finish than its entry would suggest.
Food Pairings
An ideal companion to asparagus dishes with hollandaise sauce or asparagus in brown butter.
Special Features
Nikolaihof has been farmed biodynamically according to Demeter standards since 1971 and is considered the oldest Demeter-certified winery in the world. Extended maturation in large wooden casks is a hallmark of the house, and this 2013 demonstrates what such patience can achieve with a variety typically enjoyed in its youth.
