About this wine
Character
The Imperial is one of the sparkling wine classics of the Penedès, here in magnum format. The bouquet is intense and multifaceted: ripe apples and ripe citrus fruits, alongside toasted notes, pastry and smoky hints from the long lees ageing.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow on the chalky soils, interspersed with fossil deposits, around Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. The Batlle i Gramona family has farmed vines there since 1850 and converted all 150 hectares to organic farming in 2000, at a time when this was still unusual in the Penedès. Javier Gramona and his team manage the vineyards as a living ecosystem.
Grape variety and vinification
A cuvée from various vineyards and grape varieties: the native Xarel.lo, Macabeo and Parellada, plus a small proportion of Chardonnay, all from biodynamic, Demeter-certified viticulture. Production follows the traditional method with bottle fermentation and a minimum of 50 months on the lees, often longer. 12.0% vol.
On the palate
Velvety and creamy, with a very fine mousse. The entry is lively and fresh, with ripe fruit and apple tart. As it develops, the wine becomes full-bodied without turning opulent, remaining juicy and taut throughout. The finish is long and complex.
Special features
The dosage makes the difference: since 1910 the family has been ageing oxidative wines in a solera-like system. These vintage blends, enriched with remnants of very old wines, are used to dose the Imperial, which sits at 6 g/l residual sugar at the low end of the brut range. Gramona is a member of the Corpinnat association, and the label carries the Demeter logo.
