About this wine
Character
The Imperial is one of Penedès's classic sparkling wines. Gramona produces it using the traditional method with lees ageing of at least 50 months, often longer, bottling it dry at 12.0% ABV. A Cava with real depth that retains its freshness.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow in soils shaped by limestone and fossil deposits around Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. The Batlle i Gramona family converted their entire 150 hectares to organic farming as early as 2000; today the grapes come from biodynamic, Demeter-certified cultivation. Javier Gramona and his team treat the vineyards as a living ecosystem, in which every intervention is carefully considered.
Grape variety and winemaking
A cuvée from various vineyards and grape varieties: the native Xarel·lo, Macabeu and Parellada, together with a small proportion of Chardonnay. Since 1910 the family has built up oxidative wines in a solera-like system. These complex vintage blends, containing traces of very old wines, serve as the dosage; with 6 g/l residual sugar, the Imperial sits at the lower end of the Brut range.
On the palate
Straw yellow in the glass. The nose is intense and layered: ripe apples and ripe citrus fruits, along with toasty notes from lees ageing, smoky hints and pastry. The palate opens lively and fresh, with ripe fruit and apple tart, carried by a very fine mousse, velvety and creamy. It then broadens without ever becoming heavy, staying juicy and taut throughout. The finish is complex and long.
Special features
Gramona has been producing sparkling wine in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia since 1850 and is a member of the Corpinnat association. More than four million bottles rest in its underground cellars.
