About this wine
Character
A mature, dry Grüner Veltliner that holds earthiness and citrus freshness together. After eleven years in cask it feels mature and composed without losing energy: dense, spicy, with an arc of tension that carries across the whole glass.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow in the Wachau on clay, loess and paragneiss. Nikolaihof in Mautern stands on the foundations of the Roman fort Favianis from 63 BC and is considered Austria's oldest winery. The Saahs family has run it since 1894, biodynamically certified by Demeter since 1971.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Grüner Veltliner, aged eleven years in a large, old wooden cask with extended lees contact, bottled only in April 2024 on a fruit day according to the lunar calendar. Dry, with 1.2 g/l residual sugar, 4.7 g/l acidity and 12.5% vol.
On the palate
The nose opens with lime, kaffir lime and bergamot, along with mandarin peel and a touch of sencha tea; as it warms, ripe pear and quince emerge, while pepper, coriander, caraway, clove, lemongrass and parsley shift constantly. On the palate, moderate acidity and restrained richness, with autolysis lending a fine, umami-driven texture. The finish lingers long, with mango and papaya alongside herbs and spices.
Food pairings
Grilled curry chicken with mango-pepper-chili salad, millet salad with squid and coco beans, or roasted veal sweetbreads with porcini and white tomato foam.
Special features
In 1971 Nikolaihof became Austria's first Demeter-certified winery and is considered the oldest Demeter estate in the world. The very long ageing in large wooden casks is the house's signature, known from its Vinothek line. This late release follows the same idea.
