About this wine
Character
A Riesling of great depth and finesse, ethereal in tone and without any heaviness, pale straw yellow in the glass. The bouquet stays understated: fennel seed, white blossom, mint and verbena, alongside lime, lemon and bergamot, with smoke, wet stone with lichen, almonds and lanolin in the background.
Terroir and origin
The IDIG site in Königsbach is the heart of the A. Christmann estate. First mentioned in the 14th century, it remains to this day an undivided, four-hectare monopole vineyard. The slope drops steeply to the south-southeast; beneath a layer of terra fusca limestone scree mixed with variegated sandstone and basalt lies a massive limestone subsoil. IDIG ranks among the few true grand cru sites Germany has to offer.
Grape variety and vinification
100 percent Riesling. The must spent a few hours on the skins, fermented spontaneously and at a fairly warm temperature, then aged in a large oval cask. Vinified dry, 12.0% ABV, bottled in 1500 ml magnums.
On the palate
Depth and stature, complexity and elegance. The 2024 vintage comes across as charming and nonchalant, yet precise and assured, carried by bubbling energy and vibrating minerality. The tension between earthy grounding and dancing lightness holds through to the finish.
Food pairings
With pan-fried turbot, scallops and veal medallions, as well as pheasant breast or a wild herb quiche.
Special features
Steffen and Sophie Christmann run the estate together and own 95 percent of the classified area within IDIG. The estate has farmed biodynamically since 2003, certified under respekt-BIODYN and EU organic standards, though not Demeter.
