About this wine

Character

The Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Federspiel 1988 is a mature white wine from the Wachau, released by Nikolaihof only in 2024 as an Archive Release from its own cellar. At 11.0% ABV it remains lean and precisely defined, a wine of filigree structure rather than power.

Terroir and origin

The Im Weingebirge vineyard is a vineyard within a vineyard: it belongs to the Alte Point site and borders, above Mautern, the Strudel and Süssenberg sites. Six hectares stretch northward, climbing the slope from 206 to 225 metres. The subsoil is dominated by paragneiss, which breaks through to the surface here and there, topped by loam and above all loess.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Grüner Veltliner. In Nikolaihof's Roman-vaulted cellar stands a 350-year-old oak-beam basket press; the musts ferment spontaneously, and both Riesling and Grüner Veltliner mature in large Slavonian oak casks, some for a decade or longer. The magnum format has since slowed its development even further.

On the palate

Dry, with vibrant acidity and a texture that stays light. Ripe quince and dried apricot sit alongside honey, chamomile and beeswax, with air bringing out walnut and orange zest. Add to that the variety's characteristic white pepper and a mineral depth that lingers through a long, saline finish.

Highlights

Nikolaihof stands on Roman foundations dating to 63 BC; the Saahs family has run the estate since 1894 and has farmed biodynamically under Demeter certification since 1971. It is considered the world's oldest Demeter estate and the only certified biodynamic producer in the Wachau.
