About this wine

Character

A dry Grüner Veltliner at Smaragd level, 13.5% ABV, golden leaning toward straw yellow. The bouquet is spicy and, in its maturity, highly concentrated: coconut flakes, cocoa powder, milk chocolate and roasted hazelnut, underpinned by a reduction of dried mandarin, apricot, pineapple and plum.

Terroir and origin

The Ried "Im Weingebirge" above Mautern is a Ried within a Ried: it belongs to the Ried "Alte Point" and borders the Rieden "Strudel" and "Süssenberg". Six hectares climb the slope northward from 206 to 225 metres. The subsoil is dominated by paragneiss, which breaks through to the surface here and there, overlaid by clay and, above all, loess.

Grape variety and vinification

Grüner Veltliner from Nikolaihof in Mautern, Austria's oldest winery, farmed by the Saahs family since 1894 and run biodynamically to Demeter standards since 1971. The musts ferment spontaneously, with ageing in large Slavonian oak casks in the Roman vaulted cellar, home to a 350-year-old tree press. This vintage was only released as an Archive Release 2024.

On the palate

The acidity feels lively, fresh and juicy like that of a green apple, cutting sharply across the tongue. It leaves the palate fresh, with a slightly smoky finish that lingers for a very long time.

Special features

The "Im Weingebirge" vineyard is regarded as Europe's first documented vineyard, recorded since the year 470 AD. The estate stands on the foundations of the Roman fort Favianis from 63 BC and is the only certified biodynamic producer in the Wachau.
