About this wine
Character
The Langenlois Grosse Reserve Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature 2020 is a traditional method sparkling wine from the Kamptal, bottled without dosage and entirely carried by the maturity of its base wines. Purism by design: a defined profile, 12.0% ABV, and not a single gram of sugar added to round it off.
Terroir and Origin
Langenlois is located in the Kamptal, where cool air from the northern Waldviertel sweeps through the valley to meet warm Pannonian influences pushing in from the south. High diurnal temperature variations preserve vibrant acidity; the soils range from loess and primary rock to volcanic remnants. Fred Loimer took over the estate in 1998 and converted to biodynamic viticulture in 2006. Beneath the modern black cube emerging from the vineyards lie 150-year-old loess cellars.
Grape Variety and Vinification
The cuvée brings together Chardonnay, Weissburgunder, and Grauburgunder. Since 2013, the estate has produced sparkling wine according to the méthode traditionnelle: secondary fermentation in the bottle, extensive aging on the lees, and zero dosage sugar after disgorgement. This uncompromising style leaves nothing to hide, as there is no sweetness to mask the acidity.
On the Palate
Fine, persistent perlage accompanied by lemon zest, ripe pear, and green apple, with notes of brioche from lees aging and a chalky streak. The acidity drives straight through, leaving a finish that remains bone-dry, crisp, and mineral-driven.
Food Pairings
Ideal with oysters and seafood ceviche, scallops with lemon butter, or pan-seared turbot. A Parmesan risotto also provides a wonderful counterpart to this vibrant freshness.
Special Features
Gault&Millau awarded the Langenlois Grosse Reserve Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature the title of Sparkling Wine of the Year 2023. Fred Loimer is a co-founder of respekt-BIODYN, a certification that unites biodynamic vineyard management with stringent cellar quality standards.
