About this wine
Character
Brut Nature means: no dosage, no added sweetening after the fact. Whatever is in this magnum must therefore come from the 2021 vintage itself, and the 2021 lives up to that promise. The wine feels sinewy and clear, its fruit standing unpadded, carried by a chalky spiciness.
Terroir and origin
The eight hectares of de Bichery lie in Neuville-sur-Seine and Gyé-sur-Seine, on the slopes above the meandering Seine. The Côte des Bar in the south of Champagne brings chalk-rich soils, and the wine's name takes this literally: Les Terres Mêlées, mingled soils, weaves the estate's different plots into a single cuvée rather than letting each speak for itself.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. Fermented spontaneously with the vineyard's wild yeasts, aged in used oak barrels, bottled with minimal sulphur and without fining or filtration. This is followed by at least 24 months of ageing on the lees.
On the palate
Straw yellow in the glass, with a fine, persistent perlage. On the nose, red forest berries and crisp apple, followed by fresh yeast and mineral spiciness. On the palate, juicy yet taut, with lively acidity and a dry, long finish.
Food pairings
With oysters, scallop sashimi, pan-fried turbot, or Pata Negra ham.
Special features
Raphaël Piconnet grew up on the Bichery site, where his grandfather Charles already tended vines; after years in Burgundy, Alsace, and the Jura, he took over the estate in 2015 with his wife Hannah and immediately switched to organic farming. All of the estate's Champagnes are bottled as Brut Nature.
