About this wine
Character
A dry white wine with volume and energy, carried lightly by its fine texture. The nose is fragrant and intense: yellow plum, quince and green apple, along with a touch of wax, mint and white blossom. A bouquet of noble character.
Terroir and origin
Château Climens in Barsac, Premier Cru Classé since 1855, farms 30 hectares in a single block on a limestone plateau covered with red, clay-rich sand. The drainage is the best in the appellation. The estate has been biodynamic since 2010 and Demeter-certified since 2014: chamomile and juniper grown on site and dried in the loft above the chai, sheep grazing between the vines.
Grape variety and vinification
100% Sémillon from vines around 15 years old, planted at a density of 6,000 vines per hectare. Yields were around 45 hl/ha, with only the heart of the pressing making it into the cellar. Ageing lasted nine months in wineglobes — 220-litre glass globes that neither oxidise the wine nor impart any oak character.
On the palate
Noticeably more expressive than on the nose, with plenty of substance: ripe apricot and peach, a touch of orange, quince and yellow apple, along with the waxy, liquorice-like note typical of Sémillon. A clear, soft acidity keeps volume and spice in balance, carrying through to a long finish. 13.0% vol.
Food pairing suggestions
Lobster with shellfish stock, braised chicory and peas, tempura of seafood and vegetables, and shellfish in a wild fennel and lemon broth.
Special features
Climens is renowned for its noble sweet wines; the dry whites made from pure Sémillon are the estate's newer line, and the Lilium begins with the 2022 vintage. It is also the first vintage under Jean-Hubert Moitry, who took over the majority stake from Bérénice Lurton in 2022; she remains on as a consultant. The Demeter logo appears on the label.
