About this wine

Character

Tart, herbaceous, and salty. The nose brings together white currant, crisp apple, and gooseberry with lemon verbena, lemon balm, fennel, and a touch of mint, alongside floral nuances, subtle yeast, and a cool, earthy-stony component reminiscent of rain on warm rock. Dry, 12.5% ABV; after six years, the wine is only just beginning its journey.

Terroir and Origin

The vines grow around Maribor in Štajerska Slovenija at altitudes of 380 to 490 metres, on steep slopes with gradients of up to 60 percent. The soil here is called Opok: a marl and limestone formation that provides the wines with structure without weighing them down. Michael Gross established Vino Gross less than twenty kilometres from the Austrian border and cultivates these hillsides entirely by hand alongside Maria Gross.

Grape Variety and Vinification

60 percent Sauvignon Blanc, 40 percent Riesling, from vines aged between four and 45 years. Harvested in two passes on 23 September and 10 October 2020. The wine fermented spontaneously and matured for twelve months in large used wooden casks, followed by stainless steel. Mise Tardive denotes the late bottling: it was only on 18 June that it was bottled unfined and unfiltered, with just 30 mg/l total sulphur.

On the Palate

Juicy, salty, polished. Bright fruit and citrus freshness meet herbal spice, yeasty and subtly buttery notes, as well as a chalky minerality. The acidity is seamlessly integrated into the silky texture, delivering tension without overpowering. With aeration, the wine gains depth, leading to a long finish driven by floral nuances, tart herbs, and a touch of dark berries.

Special Features

Very little is done in the cellar at Vino Gross: spontaneous fermentation without additives, ageing in large old wooden casks, bottled unfiltered and unfined, with only a minimal trace of sulphur. The 1500 ml magnum extends this pure, artisanal signature into the bottle.
