About this wine

Character

A powerful, ripely built Chardonnay from the northern Côte de Nuits. It projects with confident intensity straight out of the glass, carries ample extract, and still finds tension in the finish rather than mere opulence.

Terroir and origin

The small «Clos du Roy» parcel lies at Marsannay, the gateway to the Côte de Nuits and the only Burgundy appellation to produce wines in all three colours. It faces southeast, the soil is stony weathered limestone, and the vines are around 80 years old.

Grape variety and winemaking

Pure Chardonnay, farmed biodynamically, hand-harvested and gently pressed. In the cellar, oak use stays restrained so the origin speaks clearly in the glass. Yann Charlopin trained under his father Philippe Charlopin, whose mentor was Henri Jayer, and under Jean-Marie Fourrier; in 2013 he founded his own domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis with Justine Tissier.

On the palate

The entry is broad and dense, distinctly viscous, with oak clearly present. Around a rich, stewed fruit core wrap pronounced spice and roasted notes: espresso crema, aniseed and sage coat the palate fully. In the long finish, fine-grained minerality pulls the wine toward verticality.

Special features

A white Marsannay from vines around 80 years old, grown on just over four hectares in the Côte de Nuits, which Yann Charlopin and Justine Tissier farm by hand. The domaine's wines appear on the lists of The French Laundry, Tour d'Argent and Frenchie – a remarkable set of references for an estate not yet 15 years old.
