About this wine

Character

Pale golden yellow in the glass. A wine that demands time: shortly after opening it appears soft, buttery and still diffuse in its aromatics; with air it gathers itself, becomes powerful and complex, and reveals immense depth. Firmly structured, classic, dry, 13.0% vol.

Terroir and origin

The Sous Frétille climat covers 10.25 hectares in Pernand-Vergelesses, directly adjoining Corton. Charlopin Tissier's holding measures 0.11 hectares, almost at the crest of the hill and largely southeast-facing. The sun reaches the slope only at midday, which keeps the vineyard cool — a trait that has increasingly worked in its favour in recent years.

Grape variety and vinification

Chardonnay from old vines. The grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously, after which the wine matures slowly for 16 months on fine lees in cigar-shaped 400-litre barrels, mainly from the cooperage Atelier Centre France, with 75 to 100 percent new oak.

On the palate

On the first day the wine shows a bright, distinctly citrus nose, along with toasted nuts and a smoky note. On the second day a deeper picture emerges: a basket of citrus fruit and stone fruit, crushed limestone, a hint of smoke, classic oak and nuts. On the palate, citrusy and yellow-fruited, with great power and a fantastically long finish.

Food pairings

Mussel risotto with Tête de Moine, potato pâté in puff pastry with Gruyère, or pumpkin tarte tatin with goat's cheese and quince.

Highlights

Yann Charlopin, son of Philippe Charlopin and trained under Jean-Marie Fourrier, founded the domaine in 2013 together with Justine Tissier in Morey-Saint-Denis. The focus lies on the Côte de Nuits, with the white wines from Pernand-Vergelesses added later. Hand work in the vineyard, spontaneous fermentation, slow maturation on fine lees.
