About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir that favours transparency over density. The texture is silky, the fruit cool and clearly defined: red forest berries and ripe cherry remain recognisable from the first sip to the last, carried by an earthy undertone.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, and the wine carries the Côte de Nuits Villages appellation. "Vieilles Vignes" means old vines. Yann Charlopin and Justine Tissier farm just over four hectares in the Côte de Nuits, from Marsannay through Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée to a plot in Clos Vougeot, worked organically by hand.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Pinot Noir. The grapes are harvested by hand, fully destemmed and fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts at cool temperatures. The wine is then aged slowly on fine lees, receives minimal sulphur and is only lightly filtered. It has 13.5% vol. and is vinified dry.
On the palate
Clear and silky, with pronounced red fruit, fine acidity and a structure that carries without adding weight.
Food pairings
Pairs well with pink-roasted duck breast, coq au vin, veal fillet with morels or gently braised leg of lamb. Also with aged Comté and Époisses.
Special features
Yann Charlopin is the son of Philippe Charlopin, who worked closely with Henri Jayer; he trained under Jean-Marie Fourrier. In 2013 he founded the domaine together with Justine Tissier. The wines feature on the lists of The French Laundry, Tour d'Argent and Frenchie.
