About this wine
Character
A pale red wine of fairly transparent ruby red, which at 12.0% vol. favors freshness over power. On the nose, cinnamon cherry, cranberry, ripe redcurrant and plum, along with elderberry, herbs and blossom, plus a touch of volatile acidity that suits the wine well.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from the Côtes Catalanes in Roussillon. Tom Lubbe farms 20 hectares together with Nathalie, scattered across the hills around Calce and Espira-de-l'Agly, often surrounded by scrubland, cedars, fig trees and wild rosemary. The soils are schist and marl, black schist and black marl; the highest plots, in the garrigue, reach around 450 meters. Romanissa is one of these plots.
Grape variety and vinification
Grenache with the Grenache variant Lledoner Pelut and small amounts of Carignan. The grapes are picked fairly early, fermentation is spontaneous, and there is no extraction. Aging takes place in large neutral wood. No sulfur has been added to any of the estate's cuvées since 2015.
On the palate
Silky and juicy, the red fruit ripe and soft, again cinnamon cherry and red berries, along with blood orange, dried herbs and sweet liquorice. The tannin is barely noticeable at first, then settles as a very fine layer across the palate.
Food pairings
With mashed potatoes with caramelized apples, onions and blood sausage, with feijoada, a Portuguese mushroom stew with beans and rice, and with pheasant terrine.
Special features
Tom Lubbe bottled his first vintage, 2003, in his living room, after training with Gérard Gauby in Calce. Many of the plots carry vines aged 60 to 120 years. Cover cropping, compost and manual labor are standard practice, confirmed by Ecocert certification.
