About this wine

Character

A red at 11.0 % vol. carrying wild herbal spice and dark fruit without ever feeling heavy. The nose comes across as both untamed and charming: sour cherry, cassis, cranberry and fig, followed by elderberry pith and black olive, juniper, clove, leather and cocoa, with tobacco and cedarwood in the background.

Terroir and origin

Tom and Nathalie Lubbe farm 20 hectares around Calce and Espira-de-l'Agly, often right in the middle of the garrigue among cedars, fig trees and wild rosemary. The soils are schist and marl, including black schist and black marl. The Carignan comes from old vines on high-altitude garrigue plots at up to around 450 metres — vines too low-yielding for the cooperative, and so left standing.

Grape variety and vinification

100 % Carignan. Tom Lubbe picks early, which keeps the alcohol here at 11.0 % vol. Fermentation is spontaneous, for the reds as whole-cluster infusion, often without destemming. The cellar holds large wooden foudres, barriques, clay, concrete and fibreglass, which he considers more neutral than stainless steel. No fining, no filtration, no added sulphites since 2015.

On the palate

Soft and fruit-driven, with earthy, mineral notes coating the palate. Dry, light-footed and highly drinkable.

Special features

The 1500 ml magnum of a wine that needs no additives. Ecocert confirms what has long been practice on these plots: cover crops, compost, hand labour. The earthworms are back.
