About this wine

Character

A lightweight with character: dry, 12.0% ABV, with subdued acidity and an aromatic profile that appears distinctly matured ten years after harvest. Youthful fruit is nowhere to be found here; this white wine thrives on tart, herbal tones and genuine substance.

Terroir and Origin

Nikolaihof cultivates this Neuburger in the »Bischofpoint« and »Im Weingebirge« single vineyards. »Bischofpoint« spans 36 hectares across Mautern and Baumgarten, situated between 246 and 340 meters above sea level with a north-northeastern exposure, defined by deep-trenched rigol soils of loess and loam. »Im Weingebirge«, a sub-site within the Mautern vineyard »Alte Point«, covers exactly six hectares and climbs northward up the slope from 206 to 225 meters; beneath topsoil of loam and predominantly loess lies paragneiss bedrock, which surfaces in places. This site is considered the earliest documented vineyard in Europe, with records dating back to the year 470.

Grape Variety and Vinification

Neuburger, according to a 2013 DNA analysis likely a natural cross between Roter Veltliner and Silvaner. The estate has been cultivated biodynamically under Demeter certification since 1971; inside the historic Roman vaulted cellar stands a 350-year-old wooden beam press, and musts ferment spontaneously in large Slavonian oak casks.

On the Palate

Bright greenish-yellow in the glass. The nose presents a complex array of aromas: vegetal notes, button mushroom, onion confit, hay, and straw. Dense, textured, and somewhat expansive, driven by herbal, savory notes that likely stem from not yet fully resolved tannins.

Food Pairings

Ideal with poultry or a rich fish ragout with butter and cream.

Special Features

Archive Release 2024. Nikolaihof rests on Roman foundations dating back to 63 BC, has been managed by the Saahs family since 1894, and is the sole certified biodynamic producer in the Wachau.
