About this wine

Character

The Siccagno DOC 2022 shows Nero d'Avola in a lean, dry form. At 12.5% ABV it stays light-footed, its tension coming from acidity and fruit rather than weight. Arianna Occhipinti's signature is unmistakable: unembellished, clear, precise.

Terroir and origin

The grapes grow in the contrade around Vittoria in southern Sicily, on soils of sand, limestone and clay. Arianna Occhipinti has cultivated a total of 42 hectares across nine contrade here since 2004, each telling its own geological story. Not a single vine here has ever been irrigated, a radical decision in the Sicilian heat.

Grape variety and vinification

Siccagno is a single-varietal Nero d'Avola, Sicily's native red grape. The wine remains dry, with an alcohol content of 12.5% ABV. The estate has worked biodynamically since 2009; bottling takes place at the Azienda Agricola Arianna Occhipinti in Vittoria.

On the palate

In the glass, deep ruby red with violet highlights. On the nose, blackberry and black cherry, alongside Mediterranean herbs, fine spice and a mineral note. On the palate the wine is juicy and clearly defined, with ripe tannins, vibrant acidity and a lingering note of blackcurrant.

Food pairings

Pasta alla Norma with aubergine and ricotta salata, grilled aubergine, rack of lamb with rosemary, grilled pork or aged Pecorino.

Special features

At 21, Arianna Occhipinti bought her first hectare of abandoned vines. Today the estate includes a historic farmhouse with an antique palmento. The refusal to irrigate and the biodynamic practice since 2009 shape this wine more than any intervention in the cellar.
