About this wine
Character
Powerful yet elegant, with perfect balance: that is how Steffen Christmann describes his Riesling ideal, the Primaballerino. The Ölberg-Hart shows this balance from its most approachable side. Among the estate's Grosses Gewächse it is considered the most open and charming in its youth, and even in the 2024 vintage it appears fine and elegant rather than broad-shouldered.
Terroir and origin
The Ölberg-Hart site in Königsbach is, alongside IDIG, Meerspinne and Vogelsang, one of the VDP.GROSSE LAGEN of the A. Christmann estate in Gimmeldingen. The estate farms 17 hectares, all classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE or VDP.GROSSE LAGE; soils of variegated sandstone, limestone and terraced gravel shape each parcel differently.
Grape variety and vinification
100 percent Riesling, vinified dry, 12.0% ABV. Since 2003 the estate has farmed biodynamically according to the respekt-BIODYN guidelines: horn manure, horn silica and compost preparations instead of synthetic chemistry, with all work following the lunar calendar. After twenty years, Steffen Christmann sums up: "The roots reach deeper and the vineyards have found their balance."
On the palate
Pale straw yellow in the glass, with aromas of lemon and salted lemon, white peach, crisp apple, pear and mirabelle plum, alongside a light hint of smoky stone and crushed chalk. On the palate radiantly bright and just as charming as on the nose: depth combined with a light footprint, creamy texture, juicy acidity, round while remaining pure and powerful.
Special features
Biodynamic since 2003, certified to respekt-BIODYN and EU organic standards. Steffen Christmann, a seventh-generation winegrower and president of the VDP since 2007, runs the estate together with his daughter Sophie Christmann, a graduate of Hochschule Geisenheim. Only Riesling and Pinot are grown, with each wine coming from a single site.
