About this wine

Character

A sweet wine with drive: the sweetness of the late-harvested grapes is offset by a clear acidity that keeps it light. Honey, citrus zest and a floral note of muscat define the profile.

Terroir and origin

Col d'Orcia is located near Sant'Angelo in Colle in the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The name refers to the hill above the Orcia, the river that marks the southwestern border of the Brunello zone. Count Alberto Marone Cinzano bought the estate in 1973; today Santiago and Francesco Marone Cinzano run its 142 hectares of vineyards. The property spans 530 hectares, half of which is forest, along with olive groves featuring 400-year-old trees.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Muscat, known as Moscadello in Montalcino. As a Vendemmia Tardiva, the grapes remain on the vine for a late harvest, concentrating sugar and aroma on the vine. The result is 12.5% ABV with pronounced residual sweetness, bottled in the 375 ml half-bottle format.

On the palate

Dense and sweet without becoming heavy. The acidity carries through to the finish, where baked apple and citrus zest linger.

Food pairing recommendations

Gorgonzola, piquant Pecorino, poultry liver parfait or foie gras. Sweet-with-sweet pairings also work well: cantucci, apricot tart, flourless walnut cake.

Special features

Since 2010, Col d'Orcia has been the largest certified organic winery in Tuscany. Sheep and goats graze between the vine rows, and compost from its own cycle nourishes the soils. The Slow Wine Guide honored the estate with the SNAIL Award in 2023, and Wine Enthusiast named it Environmental Advocate of the Year in 2025.
