About this wine

Character

A dry Alsatian wine that relies on spice rather than power. The nose is razor-sharp: citrus fruit, orange and lime alongside apricot jam, peach stone and ripe mango, together with cardamom, coriander, Laos ginger and gingerbread spice. Underneath lie flint and an umami note reminiscent of meat broth and bacon.

Terroir and origin

The Heimbourg is one of the small single vineyards in the secondary and tertiary fault zone of Turckheim. Geology shifts sharply over short distances there, which explains the small size of these vineyards. The Heimbourg is the only one facing south-west to west, on low-iron limestone soil. The upper part of the slope, most exposed to the wind, is planted with Pinot.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Gris. Like most Pinot Gris from the 2016 vintage, the grapes reached full ripeness at a lower alcohol level, hence the 12.5% vol. and the elegant, dry style. The estate works biodynamically, keeps yields to 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare, gives the wines at least six months of lees contact and ages them in the cellar for one to two years.

On the palate

Juicy and full of drive, spicy, with fine tannin. Creamy sweetness and a saline undertone carry the smoky structure. The wine still feels youthful, almost unfinished, and needs time to become truly multi-faceted. Be sure to decant now and drink from large Burgundy glasses.

Food pairing recommendations

Aromatic, richly flavoured dishes: morels stuffed with fresh cheese and herbs with sherry reduction, game terrine on lentils with raisins and caramelised walnuts or crispy roast duck with orange sauce and spinach gnocchi.

Special features

Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to become a Master of Wine, farms 42 hectares; the family has been growing wine since 1620. The switch to biodynamics began in 1996 on five hectares, and horses once again work the steepest slopes.
