About this wine

Character

A red wine that forgoes weight in favor of fragrance and herbal spice. In the glass, a delicate, rusty rosehip red with a pale rim. The nose leads into the Mediterranean maquis: rosehip and sour cherry, small and wild in character, alongside forest berries, hay with wild herbs, garrigue, lavender, rosemary and thyme, pine and almond blossom. In the background, subtle toasted notes, cold smoke and chopped almonds.

Terroir and origin

Tom Lubbe and Nathalie Lubbe farm 20 hectares in the hills around Calce and Espira-de-l'Agly, high-lying garrigue parcels up to around 450 meters, often flanked by cedars, fig trees and wild rosemary. The soils consist of schist and marl, including black schist and black marl. Harvest is early, which is why the wines rarely exceed 12% alcohol; here it's 11.5% vol.

Grape variety and vinification

Grenache and Grenache gris. The estate's red wines are made through whole-bunch infusion, often co-fermented with white grapes, spontaneously and without fining or filtration. In the cellar, large wooden foudres, barriques, clay and concrete are used, though fiberglass remains the preferred vessel, as Tom Lubbe considers it more neutral than stainless steel.

On the palate

Lean and highly refined, yet sinewy and compact. The acidity never feels applied, it's well integrated and gets the saliva flowing. The wine expresses itself quietly, from the background, with fruit expression stepping back in favor of structure. Wild in the finish.

Details

Since 2015, no added sulphur has left the cellar, across every cuvée. Ecocert certification confirms the practices in the vineyard: no chemicals, instead cover crops, compost and manual work. Vinified dry.
