About this wine
Character
Intense ruby red, with a dense and deep bouquet. It shows fresh and dried cherries, cherry stones and plums, along with blood orange zest and berries, roses and violets, liquorice, tobacco, foliage and stone, forest floor with mushrooms, a hint of cedar and graphite.
Terroir and origin
The Sangiovese grows on the south-facing Poggio al Vento site, the windy hill, at around 300 metres above sea level overlooking the Orcia river. The vineyard was planted from 1974 with a mass selection of the Brunello clone. The dry, cold winter of 2015/2016 was followed by spring rains within the seasonal average, securing water reserves for July and August; the moderate September, with good day-night temperature swings, brought the grapes to full ripeness.
Grape variety and vinification
Hand-harvested with strict selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Fermentation at 25 to 28 °C in small stainless steel tanks of 50 and 60 hl, with lots from different parts of the vineyard vinified separately and selected after fermentation. Maceration over 18 to 20 days with daily pump-overs and extended délestage, malolactic fermentation in concrete tank. This is followed by three years in botti of Slavonian and Allier oak of 25 and 75 hl and around three further years in bottle.
On the palate
Concentrated and powerful, yet smooth and fresh, juicy with still slightly tart cherries, berries and orange peel. Joined by herbs and spices, a touch of wood and stone. The acidity remains clear and fine, with balsamic and ethereal notes of maturity woven into the aromatic spectrum.
Food pairings
Bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised wild boar leg, game ragù on pappardelle, aged Pecorino di Pienza or Parmigiano Reggiano.
Highlights
Poggio al Vento is Col d'Orcia's flagship wine and is only produced in great vintages. Sheep and goats graze between the vine rows, and compost from the estate's own cycle nourishes the soils. The magnum ages more slowly than the 0.75-litre bottle. 15.0% vol., dry.
