About this wine

Character

A dry Sauvignon Blanc that favours tension over loud fruit: ripe gooseberry and citrus zest sit alongside a smoky limestone note, with acidity drawing the wine out into a long finish. The Double Magnum's large format slows ageing and preserves the wine's youthful freshness for years.

Terroir and origin

Ried Grassnitzberg is classified as an Erste STK Lage cru. The vines are rooted in fossil coral reef and limestone, which give the wine its saline, mineral backbone. The Tement estate in Ehrenhausen farms almost 100 hectares of steep vineyard sites on both sides of the Slovenian border. Manfred Tement took over three hectares in 1976 and, in 1986, founded the Steirische Klassik (STK) together with like-minded winemakers.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Sauvignon Blanc. Restraint governs the cellar: spontaneous fermentation, extended lees ageing and careful maturation in large wooden foudres. Armin Tement is responsible for viticulture and cellar work. At 13.0% ABV, the wine retains a lean structure.

On the palate

Taut and focused, with a fine acid structure and subtle richness. Fresh citrus fruit and herbs carry through to a saline, mineral finish.

Food recommendations

Pairs with pan-seared turbot, scallops and saddle of veal with herb reduction. Aged raw-milk cheese also makes for an interesting counterpoint.

Special features

A rare bottling in the 3000 ml Double Magnum format. The conversion to biodynamic farming began in 2017, and the estate is a member of Respekt-BIODYN. Bottled by Tement GmbH in Ehrenhausen.
