About this wine

Character

A powerful, intensely aromatic Sauvignon Blanc that holds fruit and saline minerality in tension. It already shows open and approachable, yet has the substance for further years in the cellar.

Terroir and origin

The Ried Grassnitzberg Riff was the first vineyard owned by the Tement family, planted in the 1950s by founder Josef Tement. The old vines of this southeast-facing amphitheatre site root deep into a 16-million-year-old coral reef. The winery, based in Ehrenhausen, today farms almost 100 hectares on the steep slopes of South Styria on both sides of the Slovenian border.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure varietal Sauvignon Blanc. Following spontaneous fermentation, the wine matures for 24 months on fine lees in large old oak casks and is bottled unfiltered. 13.0% vol., dry.

On the palate

Bright, pale golden yellow with distinct green highlights. The nose is strikingly aromatic and captivates immediately: wild herbs, smoky nuances, young gooseberry, lime, orange, papaya, mango and above all cassis. On the palate it is juicy and charming, with fresh acidity and a saline note that stimulates the salivary glands.

Food recommendations

A powerful companion at the table: grilled fish and seafood, asparagus, roasted vegetables or goat's cheese.

Special features

The wine carries the Erste STK Lage classification. The Steirische Klassik was founded in 1986 by Manfred Tement together with like-minded winemakers. In the cellar, restraint prevails: spontaneous fermentation, extended lees ageing, large wooden casks. The Grassnitzberg stands at the very beginning of the estate's history and reflects the house's signature style.
