About this wine
Character
The Ried Grassnitzberg is a powerful yet coolly defined Sauvignon Blanc from Southern Styria. The fruit appears ripe and sweet, even though the wine is dry with 1.4 grams of residual sugar. The variety's green pyrazines stay restrained, providing only an underlying backdrop.
Terroir and origin
The Ried Grassnitzberg is a self-contained basin site at 300 to 420 metres, facing south-southeast, on weathered coral limestone soils with a light loam covering. The climate is comparatively cool, with pronounced nighttime cooling. For the Tement family, this site is the starting point: it was here that Armin and Stefan Tement's grandparents planted their first vineyard in the 1950s.
Grape variety and vinification
Sauvignon Blanc, spontaneously fermented to 1.4 grams of residual sugar with 6.5 grams of acidity. Depending on the batch, ageing lasted twelve or 18 months in large, neutral oak casks on fine lees, and the wine was bottled unfiltered.
On the palate
Initially silky and finely textured, with gooseberry, cassis and a touch of mint over ripe mirabelle plum. A vibrant acidity runs through the wine and is underpinned at the end by deep minerality, with a finish that remains long, fresh and saline. On the nose, yellow pear, greengage, melon, elderflower, a touch of orange, along with nettle and a chalky note.
Food pairings
With creamy cauliflower soup with fregula pasta, lentils and roasted cauliflower, with monkfish saltimbocca with orange-ginger carrots and with saddle of hare with mushroom ragout and white wine pears.
Special features
In 1986, Manfred Tement founded the Steirische Klassik (STK) together with like-minded winegrowers. The conversion to biodynamic farming began in 2017 and was completed in 2022 with Demeter certification; the winery is a member of Respekt-BIODYN. The wine is only at the beginning of its development, with potential for around 20 years.
