About this wine
Character
This Riesling is an opulent, almost baroque Wachau white wine: full-bodied and round, yet fresh and precise. A small portion of botrytised grapes was intentionally co-fermented, pointing to notes of honey and dried fruits. They take nothing away from the clarity of the nose.
Terroir and Origin
Ried Grillenparz is situated on gneiss soils, with the vines planted on steep, sun-drenched terraces. Nikolaihof is regarded as Austria's oldest winery, resting on the Roman foundations of the Favianis fort dating back to 63 BC. The Saahs family has farmed the estate since 1894, biodynamically under Demeter certification since 1971, now spanning 22 hectares.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Varietal Riesling, fermented with native yeasts and aged for several years in large, old wooden casks. The musts ferment spontaneously in Slavonian oak casks, and pressing takes place in the Roman vaulted cellar using a 350-year-old tree press. The wine is dry with 13.0% ABV.
On the Palate
Polished, creamy texture and plenty of grip. The crisp acidity is firmly anchored in the full body, delivering a mouth-filling and deep structure. The long finish remains juicy and carries ripe citrus notes. A wine to enjoy today and over the next twenty years.
Special Features
Demeter-certified and recognised as the oldest Demeter winery in the world. Exceptionally long ageing in large wooden casks is the hallmark of the estate: the Vinothek 2008 spent 16 years in a 3,500-litre cask and was bottled in April 2024. In 2014, the Vinothek Riesling 1995 became the first Austrian wine ever to receive 100 Parker points.
