About this wine
Character
Loimer brings together Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from Ried Loiserberg in a single bottle, dry and at 12.5% vol. The nose opens boldly with kaffir lime, bergamot and delicate citrus oils, followed by green pear, yellow apple, nashi pear and white peach. Over time, white pepper, white tea and sencha emerge, along with a touch of flint and chalky earth. In the glass, a rich, radiant lemon yellow with green reflections.
Terroir and origin
Ried Loiserberg, a Premier Cru vineyard of the ÖTW, sits at 350 to 390 metres above sea level. The soil consists mainly of mica schist and clayey layers of brown earth. In the Kamp Valley, cool air from the Waldviertel meets Pannonian warmth, creating large temperature swings. Fred Loimer, who took over the estate in Langenlois in 1998, has worked biodynamically since 2006 and co-founded respekt-BIODYN a year later.
Grape variety and vinification
67% Grüner Veltliner and 33% Riesling from vines between 12 and 65 years old, yielding just under 40 hl/ha. The harvest took place in two batches, on 23 September and 4 October 2023, after an August marked by rain and cooler days that slowed ripening. The whole clusters were pressed and spontaneously fermented in large, multi-year oak casks. The wine spent twelve months on full lees, followed by eight months on fine lees in steel tank after the first racking. Bottled in August 2025.
On the palate
First the Riesling side comes through: cool, stony, juicy, with an almost saline minerality and delicate phenolics that lend texture and length. With air and warmth, the richness of the Grüner Veltliner emerges, an almost creamy element, along with ripe pear, a touch of quince and white peach. Herbs, stone, salt and subtle bitter notes remain the defining traits.
Details
